Needle felted hearts SUNDAY SESSION
We met for our monthly Sunday Session and the creative energy was buzzing as members gathered for a special needle-felting session filled with colour, community and compassion.
The get-together focused on crafting beautiful needle-felted hearts — small handmade tokens carrying a powerful message of care and connection. The workshop was warmly led by Katerina from Woolstore Ireland, who guided participants through the process of shaping, layering and sculpting wool into vibrant hearts.

From the first fluff of carded wool to the final careful needle strokes, the room was filled with conversation and concentration. Some members are seasoned felters, confidently shaping their hearts with smooth, even finishes. Others are newer to needle felting, discovering the rhythmic quality of the craft for the first time.

Katarina shared helpful techniques for achieving firm shapes, neat edges and a perfect heart curve. Laughter (and the odd 'ouch') mixed with the soft, steady sound of felting needles as each participant added their own unique touch. No two hearts were exactly alike — each one reflecting the hands and heart that made it. We also learned to create a texture filled heart using a wire frame which was a wonderful new technique for most of us.

While the morning was full of creativity and camaraderie, the project carried a deeper meaning. The purple hearts created during the session are destined for patients and families in hospice care.

These handmade tokens will serve as small gestures of comfort — something soft to hold, a reminder that others are thinking of them, and a symbol of compassion during challenging times. The choice of purple is especially fitting, representing dignity, respect and care.

It was a moving reminder of how craft can extend far beyond the making process. A simple heart, formed from wool and patience, becomes a tangible expression of community support.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Katarina for leading such an inspiring session and to every member who gave their time and talent on the day.

Moments like this remind us that when wool, hands and hearts come together, something truly meaningful can be made
